The Berlin Blockade. Gail S Halverson.
The Berlin blockade is the most important event of the Cold War because it was the first major clash that occurred during that time and it was an attempt made by the Soviets to limit the ability of France, Great Britain and the United States to travel to their sectors in West Berlin. This blockade foreshadowed future conflicts over Berlin, this wall separated East and West Berlin and also blocked all rail roads, supply routes to prevent supplies’ from entering. So Truman decided to supply West Berlin with air by sending in airlifts the next day each with 20,000 pounds of flour this was when the Berlin Airlift was introduced for the very first time. Once I landed with the 20,000 pounds of flour I realized that all the women and children were surrounded by me. This blockade was followed by three major key events and two main reasons that caused it to happen from the first place. The first key event; the institution of the Marshall plan for European recovery. The second key event; London conferences of spring 1948. The third key event; the London program that separates west Germany into four different zones which is France, Great Britain, United States and West Berlin. One of the reasons were that the USA and the USSR had different aims and ideas of what they were both going to do with Germany, Stalin wanted to destroy Germany while Britain and the USA wanted to rebuild Germanys industry. On the 12th of May 1949 the soviets lifted the blockade that was between west and east Berlin which showed that the allies had a clear victory. The picture on the bottom right shows how Germany looked like in 1948. West Germany was split into four different zones/sectors which is the French Sector,British Sector,American Sector and West Berlin. The Blockade that the soviets built blocked all resources from entering West Berlin which means that the citizens of the west part of Germany which were mostly women and children were starving.
